Dark Chocolate Coffee Cupcake Recipe

Who doesn’t need a chocolate cupcake every once in a while?

I paired this dark chocolate cupcake recipe with my favorite coffee icing to make an amazing combination!  I hope you enjoy!

Dark Chocolate Coffee Cupcake Recipe


  • 1 cup flour (You can use Better Batter Flour to make these Gluten-Free)
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg


  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar (possibly more)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons strong brewed coffee
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions for Cupcakes:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cupcake pan with cupcake liners. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda, salt and baking powder. Set aside. In a separate bowl, mix the boiling water and cocoa until dissolved.
  2. In a large bowl, mix 1/2 cup butter with electric mixer for 30 seconds. Slowly add sugar, mixing well. Mix with electric mixer for 2 more minutes. Add vanilla and egg, blending well.
  3. Add flour mixture and cocoa mixture. Beat with electric mixer. Pour into cupcake liners. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

:Directions for Frosting

Using an electric mixer, combine butter and cream cheese together in a bowl until creamy. Slowly add in confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, coffee, and salt. Add more confectioners’ sugar if the frosting needs a stiffer consistency.

Garnet with Chocolate Piece.
